I was told about Mona recently (a personal shopping app). I'm always a little hesitant to try new "custom" shopping apps - as I feel many are the same. They send you things they think you'll like, you leave feedback, etc, etc. But often I feel like I keep paying the styling fee for months, and don't end up with things I really like (true, it probably takes a while for the customization algorithm to go through but I also usually end up cancelling as I don't want to continue to pay fees for things I don't love).

Mona was different. From the second I started using it, I felt like it was customized to my style (not sure how they knew that but I'm not complaining...), had great options, and best of all... everything was priced incredibly affordably (Sam Edelman shoes for under $100? Sign me up!). The other cool thing about this app is it recommends 20 items it thinks you will like. With Mona also (different than Stitch Fix or others) you don't have to pay a personal styling fee (which I like as I can spend the same styling dollars on other treats - yay for clothing treats!). You're also able to create "missions" in Mona - and doesn't shopping often feel like a mission (can I get an Amen?!). But the missions are made easier by the options that Mona shares with you.

I set a mission for a pair of black boots (because a lady can never have enough of those...). As a New Yorker, my poor boots always take a beating during the winter, so it was time to refresh my foot wardrobe. I set up my mission, put in my price constraints, included my size and BAM - so many options to choose from (I almost felt like I had TOO many options!). It lets you scroll though easily and seamlessly, so you're not overwhelmed by hundreds of images at once. I decided on a pair of Nine West boots (I LOVEEEEE NW). Plus free shipping.

My boots arrived and I was super stoked. Chunky heel black (yay). I put them on excited to take on the world and alas... they didn't fit. BUT I'm glad I had the experience of having to return and replace because it showed me how great of a customer service department Mona has. They emailed me PERSONALLY every step of the way letting me know when my shoes were shipped, and even checking to make sure I received.

The process with Mona was totally seamless and truly awesome. As a gal who doesn't always have time to be schleppin' around New York stores, Mona will definitely become my new friend.
It's been a while since I've written. A really long while. I've been telling people repeatedly over the past year, "my blog has taken a backseat. Life's just been so busy." While we can make many excuses in life, and things do get busy, it is still important to make the time for things that bring us joy. Sounds simple, right? But it isn't always.

Lately, I have been making a conscious effort to dedicate time to writing. This year has been crazy. I've been through some big relationship changes, moves, New York kicking my ass (doesn't it do that to everyone?) and many amazing moments with incredible people. That all said, it doesn't always leave time for dedication to passion projects. Yet, very recently. I was reminded of why I do this blog in the first place. You, lovely readers, have written and asked me where I've been and reminded me why I do this. And I am grateful.

I am working on something exciting coming soon. That will take this blog in a different direction. I'm excited to share it with you all. And thanks for joining me on this crazy journey we call life.

If you haven't already seen, Oprah Magazine published a Q&A section that blatantly told women that "if - AND ONLY IF - you have a flat stomach, should you try wearing a crop top."

Did I hear that correctly? Wait. pump the brakes.

SAY WHAAAAAAAAAAAT?

I can't believe that we have seemingly regressed so far back in our body-positive attitude. It's 2015, babes! We're finally seeing "real women" (and I hesitate to even use quotation marks there because what defines a REAL woman?) in media, "plus-size model" is becoming less of a term (thankfully we just call them MODELS now), and women are generally moving in a direction where they're beginning to become comfortable with their bodies after years of body-shaming from media and society.

So, WHAT IN THE WORLD, O MAGAZINE? I am so utterly disappointed to see this in a publication that previously had such a body-positive audience, and had such an esteemed reputation.

Now, here's the good part about all this mess. Women are speaking up AND using their body-positive voice to showcase that they can't be told what to wear or how to feel about themselves based on body-type. Yesterday the internet exploded when all types of women, advocates, and bloggers alike took the Net to share their thoughts on the matter by using the hashtag #rockthecroptop and #pullingoffacroptop. Head over to the hashtags on Instagram or Facebook and you'll see beautiful women of every shape and size wearing a crop top and showing their figure - and YES - they're joyful about how they look! And that's what counts.

To my dear women - PLEASE continue to wear what makes you feel good, and continue to kick ass while doing it.

In love and crop tops,

Everybody's got the fever

That is something you all know

Fever isn't such a new thing

Fever started long ago
*Fever by Peggy Lee

A new app, Fever, is very similar to the sultry jazz song. Though Fever wasn't started long ago (2013, to be exact), soon enough, everyone will have Fever.

Fever is a free, smart app that helps you make better plans. It finds you the best experiences and keeps you in the loop of what your favorite friends and tastemakers are up to today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Fever recently reached out to me as a gallivanter of New York and surveyor of new cities, to take a look at their app and bring my thoughts to the readers of JustSaraJane, in anticipation of their app launching in London (today!). And here's my take - it's awesome! This lifestyle app uncovers personalized, premium lists of experiences in your city and takes a new approach to uncover tailored experiences. Unlike “event discovery” listing sites which display hundreds of events (sometimes making it hard to choose), Fever’s event suggestions are personalized just for you (knowing this gal... did someone say sample sale?!), and is based on what interests you and the people you care about.

To start building a profile on Fever, you are asked to pick “hashtags” of things you love to do. Categories for these “hashtags” include fashion, party, food, shopping, sports, culture, music and more. That said, you can only choose three hashtags at a time, which initially was a confusion to me, but I realize that you can consistently update your hashtags to populate the results. By then telling Fever your favorite things, the app is able to start pulling local experiences set for you, gives you the ability to RSVP and purchase tickets to any experience through the app.

So here's a scenario. I'm sitting at work with some coworkers deciding if we should do something after happy hour. I get on Fever, check out the #tastings hashtag for the day, and BAM, I see my foodie-friend John is going to a tasting in the west village. We all then book it for (say) $25, grab a cab, and are munching on crudités before you can say "that was easy."

So, this post is dedicated to Fever and a most happy launch day in London (also, note, Fever just reached 1.5 million worldwide users). To my dearest London readers, go ahead and join in on the fun. And to my New Yorkers, do continue seeking fun (as I know you will).
I think this most aptly describes New York at this very moment. We're in some weirdish middle-ground between winter and spring (but we're getting there, you guys!), where no one knows exactly how to dress for this awkward temperature. We've stowed away our puffy jackets for the most part, but have also still shelved our pastel spring skirts. We ask ourselves the daily questions: "do I wear tights?" or "do I brave the 55 degrees with bare legs?" In the spirit of this interim period where we're all confused about what season it is, I've attributed this post to the "gray area" between winter and spring. Let's face it, much of life is shades of gray anyway.

So here's to you, New York of today. We don't know what season we're in, but we love you anyway.

I'm a size 10. Typically. And I say typically because my body doesn't always fit into the mannequin-ed version of sizing that Banana or Gap wants women to fit into (brands I love, however!). See, a size 10 leaves me, as an American woman, somewhere in the middle. Straight sizes are defined as size 0-4, and plus sized begins at size 12. The average American woman is a size 14. (I'm sure you saw all the hoopla about Ashley Graham and Robyn Lawley, both in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit addition this year. Two absolutely stunning models, both defined as plus size - when they are anything but "plus").

I can wear any size between an 8-12 on any given day, as I'm sure many of you can relate to. But as a woman, I am constantly pressed to define myself by my specific size. See, in America, we're obsessed with definition - we need to define our relationships, job titles, social status. Definition can sometime makes things easier. But sometimes it doesn't. In this instance I'm talking about women's clothing sizing. We have so many women in America trying to attain sizes that don't fit their body, because society/media/etc says so. Other countries suggest you measure your pants size by the actual circumference of your waist (e.g. Size 29, 30, 31). I think they're better off. I think knowing your measurements, and YOURS only, is the first step to body confidence. Hey, no one is perfect. I, of course, have days where I catch myself thinking, "I wish I could fit into blah blah blah size." And then I remember I am not defined by my size. I am somewhere "in between" and that is great. I know my measurements and don't always look at the tag when I go shopping. I pick what fits me.

I am not defined by my size. I am defined by my abilities and my skills and the amazing things my body does on a daily basis. I am defined by the fact that I aim to be the best version of myself, rather than working to be someone else.

In the spirit of this conversation, I'm excited to share that I've teamed up with SmartGlamour, a fully customizable clothing line, that focuses on body positivity and knowing your specific measurements. I'll be hosting an evening at their POP-UP SHOP this coming Thursday, April 9th from 6-9pm. At the SmartGlamour shop, women of every size, shape, height, weight and can shop in the same space, for the same designs, for the same price. Welp. Spring has sprung, and in New York, that apparently means more snow. We have been dealt a pretty severe winter as many of you North easterners can attest to. But as New Yorkers do, we persevere onward. So one balmy Saturday, I decided to persevere out into the winter, ditch my puffy coat and replace it with a white number that makes me feel excited to step out into the 20 degree weather. Check out some snaps of the look and let me know how you're surviving winter in the comments below!

See you soon spring (hopefully). Until then, onward! With more layers and red lips.

I spent Friday night blissfully surrounded by the spirit of body positivity at the SmartGlamour fashion show.

For those of you who haven't heard me talk about SmartGlamour yet, I'll say it this way. When you meet someone, or see a brand, who is totally changing the game, you just know it. SmartGlamour is one of those brands.

SmartGlamour is a clothing line for women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and heights. Sizes range from XXS-6XX and beyond, all items are fully customizable and all are under $100. Founder and designer behind SmartGlamour, Mallorie Carrington started the brand in the spirit of body positivity - her line is meant to empower, to help women feel more confident and to love their bodies.

One of my favorite parts about the brand is their latest campaign, importantly named #MeasureMeBeautiful. The campaign is the brainchild of SmartGlamour designer Mallorie Carrington and co-sponsored by body-positive blogger Sydney Stone of Stylaphile. It’s a movement to educate women on the importance and benefits of knowing your measurements and your body. In my conversation with Mallorie after the show, she reinforced that #MeasureMeBeautiful enforces women to "measure themselves, and see those numbers are purely information, as not something that is a positive or a negative, it's just a fact."

These themes were totally palpable at Friday's show. Not only could you see it on the faces of everyone attending, but most importantly you could see it on the models - who were every size, shape, age, height and ethnicity. We saw the same outfit on multiple body types, and every woman was a vision of confidence and happiness in what she was wearing.

NOW ABOUT THE CLOTHES. There were a bevy of bright colors, floral feminine prints, and versatile jumpsuits and dresses. There were retro fits, high-waisted skirts, maxi dresses and short rompers. And then, there were the fabulous satin bomber jackets, which Mallorie wore to close out the show, aptly reading "BOSS" in pink letters across the back.

In our conversation after the show Mallorie told me, "there is always an underlying theme of a feminine in my pieces, and I love the retro silhouette. And because of the message behind the clothing, I always try to infuse a little bit of bad-ass." Damn right, she does. My favorite pieces on the runway were their new clutches with empowering words emblazoned across (babe, BOSS, feminist). As Mallorie says,

"Any woman can be a boss, any woman can be a lady, any woman can be a feminist, any woman can be a babe."

I think that sums up why this brand is amazing.

Stay tuned as SG is opening a pop up shop in NYC on March 6th on the Lower East Side. It will be the first and only store in NYC where women of every single size can buy the exact same clothes at the exact same price, customized to their body. They'll be doing weekly events to bring attention to the body positive movement. Women of New York, stay tuned!

So my friends, do remember to be kind to yourself, be good to your body, and dress it accordingly.

I've been talking a lot lately about finding inspiration. Most recently this past weekend, I was asked about inspiration by a fellow writer over a glass of whiskey. "What makes you feel motivated?" they asked. In my reflection, I've thought about how a new year gives us many different chances to seek what makes us feel motivated, happy and fulfilled. For me, joy in life is defined by living your truth and continuing to create yourself. I think fashion gives the daily opportunity to create ourselves and showcase this continual creation to the world. It's an outlet for experimentation, inspiration, and affirmation of who you are. I'm motivated by the opportunity fashion provides us to showcase this, and was thus, motivated to write this post, wearing my favorite style staple, a black & white ensemble.

So while I don't believe things in life are always black and white, I do believe a great outfit can be. In tune with this mantra, I created a theme for this week and styled various looks in my favorite color combo. My first look, pictured above, pays tribute to not only my fave b&w, but to pieces that I feel genuinely happy in, and that express my personal style. SEE: BLACK AND GOLD DUNKS.

Hope your year is off to a wonderful start my friends, and remember that while many black and white styles are great, life is really most beautiful in color.

I'm not big on your old-fashioned resolution-making. I am big, however, on introspection and bettering oneself throughout the next year and into the great beyond on this journey we call life. I think this can be accomplished through thinking about where you want to go over the 365 days, but by also reaffirming the things that you like about yourself and what makes you YOU.

For 2015, I set goals for myself by vowing to do (or keep doing) things that make me happy. And part of that is still figuring out more and more things that bring me joy and how I can share that joy with others. I hope to worry less, write more, perform continuously and spread love continually. I like to break down my overarching goals into small practices throughout my every day life. For life is not about finding yourself, but about creating yourself. And hey, we're all a work in progress, babe.

So cheers to you, my friends, may your 2015 be a year that you celebrate, embrace who you are, and dress for the occasion.
Headphones. These babies are so effortlessly cool, I instantly think anyone who's wearing them is some sort of music mogul (also constantly wishing I was one, too). For some reason, I think people who wear big headphones need to HEAR the beat better, because they like, do music professionally. (Anyway, I digress.) These headphones are totally chic, and a great investment for the friend who lives for music. They might be in a band, or they might just take you to all of the cool concerts in Williamsburg that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

Did you really think a piece of jewelry wasn’t going to make our gift guide? Opt for a funky but versatile jewelry option for her this year. I like cuffs, as they’re easy to pair with anything that your fashionable friend will be rocking this season. I’m loving this Kristen Elspeth piece, as the LA-based designer sources her materials from Los Angeles and New York, and works with local metal-smiths to perfect each design. Unique designs with a local flare? I say yes.

The purse. We all know the BFF gift is the hardest. It has to be thoughtful, yet practical, yet creative and amazing, much like your BFF. I really do love my FitBit (well I have a Jawbone, but still, same idea). I love knowing how many steps I’m taking, how many more I need to reach my goal, how much good sleep vs. bad sleep I’m getting. But what I don’t always love is how it sticks out like a clunky handcuff on my wrist. Especially when I’m trying to go to a classy affair and people are like, 'what’s that big plastic thing next to your gold bracelet?' Well, fear no more, walking women of New York! Tory Burch has found an elegant way to conceal your Fitbit® when you're on the go (of course she has, that classy lady). This polished Tory Burch cuff is detailed with geometric cutout stripes at the front, and has a hinged door to offer easy installation of the Fitbit® Flex™. Voila! May you walk to your hearts content!

Thank you notes. Get a gift for yourself. Well sort of. Pick up a package of thank you notes, because if there’s one thing I believe in life, it’s that the best thing we can practice is gratitude.

As a New Yorker, I think the "just in case" mentality is ingrained in your mind, the same way that you know that bagels are best with cream cheese.

To that end, one must always be prepared for New York's (or any city, for that matter) many curve balls. As a woman of the world, your purse acts as a great carry-all to prepare you for basically anything. At any given moment, in my purse, you can probably find enough toiletries, food, and accessories to last me at least 48 hours if needed.

As for some of my other handbag staples, you can always find lipstick/gloss, a pair of sunnies, necessary cards, and a safety pin! I'm also a fan of using everyday items that double as style staples, (hint - dryer sheets. Check out my recent post on that!

As for the purse itself, it most certainly needs to reflect my "ready for anything" lifestyle. I'm really loving bucket bags lately (see photo of what I'm carrying, below!), as they have plentyyyy of space, but still look incredibly chic. They easily transition from day to night - and you can carry all your day-to-night goodies with ease. Also, the cinch is nice added security to make sure your prized possessions don't go flying around.

For this post, I was inspired by Rue La La (if you don't know them already, you should), a fab online shopping destination that toasts designer brands at stellar prices. The gals at Rue love handbags as much as I do, and too believe that what's inside your bag is probably more important than the bag itself. That said, Rue La La has just launched a new handbag style guide, which shares info about iconic designs, must-know maintenance tips for your purse, and the origins of this essential accessory. Check it out!
Ever feel like you’re staring aimlessly into your closet
saying, “I just don’t know what to wear?” Yeah, me too. So I’m trying a new
tactic, where I start with a piece of statement jewelry and build an outfit
around it.

For this post on statement jewels (and more to come this
week) I’m collaborating with Trend Tribe,
a New York-based accessories company that not only has some super-snazzy trends
(ALL for under $50!), but also provides college students hands on experience as
philanthropic entrepreneurs (learn more about their Trendsetter Program here). Read on for a giveaway below!
Trend Tribe’s Gold
Cleopatra necklace (get YOURS with code justsarajane25 for free shipping!) acted as a backdrop for my cozy
fall outfit. I pulled from the taupe color in the necklace to opt for a
matching sweater and corresponding accessories. The chunky cropped sweater (opt
for solid colors as a background) showcased the necklace perfectly, and a green
hat was great for pulling out the orange contrasting color in the necklace. And
as we all know, fall is great for rocking your favorite sweaters, but instead of
pairing with jeans, try a circle skirt (like this
one) that will highlight the waist and give a sense of occasion to the
look. Fabulous booties are a must to complete the look!
Fall has ARRIVED. And it is making an entrance.

All hail the season of crisp air, fantastic boots, and fabulous layers. That said, there are some of our favorite warm-weather pieces that we aren't yet ready to store under the bed. I'm sharing a layered look today (special for fall!), where I'm re-purposing some warm-weather faves (and closet staples!).

A chambray shirt can go a long way. Use as a base for layering thicker sweaters and jackets (you are now prepared for any temperature!). Play with varying patterns in between layers. If you're opting for a bold skirt (like this one), use the top of your outfit to balance out with solids. Lastly, the bold lip is BACK. Celebrate accordingly.
Anyone who has even looked at my Instagram once, or see me at basically any event over the past month knows I have worn the hell out of this royal blue jumpsuit from ASOS (I think I'm in love!). Jumpsuits are a perfect transition to fall, as they are versatile, can be worn with a light jacket, and are fantastic to accessorize with a scarf or great necklace. I like this one because of it's bright color, and cinched waist belt that gives it structure while still keeping me comfy!

I wore my jumpsuit on my latest trip to San Francisco a few weeks ago (am very overdue for this post), where the temperatures were unpredictable (as anyone who has been to SF knows well). A jumpsuit travels well (just roll into a ball - literally), and can be worn so many ways while on vacay!

Here's one thing I know for sure, jumpsuits are bound to be my new best pal.
Happy Saturday, beauties! New Yorkers have celebrated a summer of (amazingly) perfect temperatures, making dressing from day-to-night a total breeze. A black and white look is not only a JustSaraJane staple, but also great for transitioning your wardrobe from the office (or weekend errands!) to a night out. This silk tank (Joe Fresh) pairs easily with the classic and comfy black jean (similar J Brand pair here), and can be worn with a light cardigan while at work or out and about. My Free People bag (an absolute MUST for any travelers) acts as a carry-all, perfect for packing a pair of heels for after work fun. As always at JSJ, we try not to break the bank - every piece included is under $50! Shop the look above.
Hope you're enjoying the lasting glimmers of summer, friends!

I recently collaborated with the fabulous SmartGlamour, a clothing line completely dedicated to women feeling good in their bodies. As if these awesome gals aren't doing enough great stuff to change the way women view themselves, SG is onto their newest venture. They launched an educational campaign called #MeasureMeBeautiful (www.measuremebeautiful.com) which is aimed at increasing awareness about the benefits and importance of knowing one's measurements, accepting them, and eventually - loving them.

This weekend, SmartGlamour will be hosting pop up events (August 16th and 17th) in NYC parks where they'll give out free tanks with the MMB logo on the front and slots on the back where women fill in their measurements. They'll also be showing women how to properly measure themselves.

If you haven't caught on to the Instagram campaign, just take a peek at the below, and see how women are celebrating their measurements!

So, my friends, go and give your body some love - check out #MeasureMeBeautiful this weekend in NYC!

When you meet someone who is totally changing the game, you just know it.

I met Mallorie Carrington a few months ago, the old-fashioned way -- on ye olde Twitter. I noticed she was being featured in one of my favorite body-positive publications, GirlTalkHQ, for her "Clothing Line Dedicated To Being Woman Forward, Not Fashion Forward." "I use models of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicity – and there is no retouching on any girl. We will never use airbrushing to edit our girls or our clothing," Mallorie told GirlTalkHQ.

A former model herself, Mallorie felt there was a need for clothing that wasn't defined by size. So she started SmartGlamour, a line of clothing completely dedicated to women feeling good in their bodies. Every piece of clothing is handmade in New York, and ranges from sizes XXS to 3X. SmartGlamour has three main very broad goals: to empower women through clothing and help them on a road to body acceptance, to make good quality clothing that is sold at affordable prices, and to cut away at women on women hate that stems from insecurity and the belief that beauty and brains can not go hand in hand. I've been fortunate to work as a supporter of the body-positive/no-Photoshop movement first-hand, most recently modeling for Verily Magazine. We here at JSJ are in full support of loving your body, and believe confidence shouldn't be defined by a size chart. Working with Mallorie and the SmartGlamour was a real collaboration dream come true!

SmartGlamour toasts a personalized shopping experience, enabling every fashionista to custom create their look. You can choose to add-on options such as: hem length, waistband height, and custom garment measurements tailored to the exact size and fit you want. The SG website shares words of encouragement for those who may be feeling the negative stigmas attached to fashion, style, and taking care of your appearance: "the next time you need a basic fashion staple, have a bad shopping experience because you feel defined by size, you feel shamed by other women or society, or you have a difficult time finding pieces that fit correctly without alterations – shop here instead."

Mallorie was kind enough to offer to make a dress specifically for moi, The Meredith Wrap Dress. Of course, I chose black (could you have GUESSED?). So today, my lovely readers, I am sharing the gift made for JustSaraJane. And I'm not talking just about the dress. It's a gift that a brand is truly working to change public thinking on body positivity, and encourage women to use fashion as an empowerment and confidence tool.

I'll leave you today with this fantastic quote on the SG website. "We are all born different – embrace that. Own your body – and dress it accordingly."

I want to shout this from the rooftops. Who's with me?

As someone who loves wearing black as much as I do, rocking a total white look was a bit of a daunting thought. But I am LOVING an all-white look this summer! So today, in celebration of barbeques, beach days, and boatloads of sunshine, I'm sharing four ways to rock your summer whites!

1) Go monochrome
Monochrome is having a moment this summer. So clean and sophisticated. Try matching a skirt and a top (see above), or opting for a white dress (go for a light fabric like linen or cotton). When accessorizing with monochrome, you can offset a colorful piece against the white background, or just continue the white trend throughout your accessories!

2) White pencil skirt
I really love a white pencil skirt with a statement tee (try a rocker tee, can give an edge to an otherwise dainty outfit), a boxy crop top, or a peplum blouse. When finding the right pencil skirt, look for one that cinches in at the knees. Some pencil skirts can often have a boxy effect, if not cinched in the right place. Embrace your curves and highlight your natural waist with a pencil skirt this summer!

3) A crisp white shirt
What’s the easiest way any woman can look incredible without really trying? Invest in a versatile white blouse. I love the effortless look of pairing a white shirt with jeans, or cut off shorts. Add mixed metallic jewelry for an overall vibe that is summery-chic and fun. Tie-up white shirt with an skirt to highlight the waist. The opportunities are endless with a white shirt! Fit is also critical. Be sure you find one that fits you properly; tailor if necessary, as this is a piece that will never go out of style.

4) Accessorize
White shoes are so fantastic, especially when paired with an outfit where another color is the primary. I also love big white glasses, or a white clutch to complete a look. Matching your white accessories isn’t an overwhelming as other colors can be. It gives an overall cleanliness to the look.

Be bright and celebrate whites this summer!
As a gal on the go, I feel like I have to be prepared for anything, especially when living in a city like New York.

Today I bring you 5 everyday items that can double as style and beauty staples if you’re looking for how to improve your life. These items can be easily thrown in a purse and can be used for so many different things! Perfect for the gal on the go.

1. Multipurpose lip balm. Rosebud Salve is my go-to choice for lip balm. But you could also use Vaseline or Aquaphor for these purposes. I use it as a chap stick (it leaves your lips looking silky and smooth!), a hand moisturizer for those dry spots, and even to tame flyaway hairs or brows!

2. The safety pin. I never leave home without a safety pin! They can be used to replace a missing button, to tighten up a loose skirt, or perhaps my favorite use – to help you zip up a dress! No one around to help you zip up the back of your dress? Attach a safety pin to the zipper closure, tie to a string, and then pull up on the zipper to zip up the dress. Voila!

3. Dryer sheets. I keep these babies in my purse to tame frizzy hair or stray flyaways. I have naturally very wavy hair that often takes on a life of its own when there’s even a bit of humidity. Keep a few sheets in your purse and say goodbye to frizz!

4. Dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is a beautiful invention. As most gals know, second-day hair can often do wonders for styling. I love to use dry shampoo to give my hair more OOMPH, but more than anything I use it to add texture and volume. It works wonders!

5. Thin scarf. I love scarves. They add color and life to any outfit! A thin scarf can easily be thrown into a purse and can act as a shawl, headband, or belt. So many options, but takes up so little space!

Ahhh, 4th of July. A day where independence is celebrated, America is revered, and many hot dogs are consumed. Nothin’ like it.

I love the July 4th for so many reasons. Yes, beaching, barbeques and wearing American flag paraphernalia is all fun and good, but it’s a part of something greater. Everyone (at least most people I know) have some sort of 4th of July tradition. There’s something so wonderful about holiday traditions – it’s great to look forward to something every year. I believe they’re especially nice when shared with others. So today I’m bringing you one of my very favorite July 4th traditions – my family’s American flag cake.

This cake is super simple, fruity and fresh, and supremely celebratory. And the best part? NO BAKING REQUIRED! And contrary to what my name might suggest, I usually opt in for bake-free options.

Check out the below recipe for my 'celebrate your independence' cake!

READY. SET. BAKE.

Step 1) Print out photo of American flag (hopefully you know what this looks like already, but reference is good).

Step 2) Buy PLAIN pound cake or angel food cake at local grocery. Also buy blueberries and raspberries (one or two bins is sufficient).

Step 3) Slather on whipped cream, covering the whole top of the cake.

Step 4) Put blueberries and raspberries on top of the cake in the design of the American flag. Use creative DIY skills to create fruity stars and stripes.

Step 5) My favorite touch. Buy tiny American Flags to put a top the cake. Serve cake to friends with their individual flag, because who doesn’t want to wave a tiny American flag?

P.S. Another SUPER EASY option is to buy plain cake cupcakes (vanilla). Top with whipped cream. Add assortment of blueberries and raspberries. Bonus points if you manage to create a tiny American flag on it. Unlikely, but go for it.

Happy 4th of July, friends! May you celebrate the red, white and blue in the sweetest of style!
No no, we’re talking about the seven stages of grief (well, not totally, anyway).

This past week I did a three-day juice
cleanse. To describe it in one word, I would say it was
“ridiculousyetenergizing yetstarvingyethangry butinteresting
andadventurous.” Oh wait, should I spell that out for you?

For all of you who know me (and for those of you who don’t), I am not a juice cleanse-y type girl. I LOVE food (sh** some girls say). I love indulging in food. I love socializing around food (and adult beverages, am I right?). That said, I also like being healthy (eating right and exercising is important, hunnies), but I’m not one to jump on every health craze out there. The thought of just pouring liquids into your body for three days - without having any morsels of delicious food pass your mouth - was a bit too far for this gal.

Then again, I’m always up to try new things (it’s 2014 - as my best friend would say, this is THE YEAR!). My coworkers were talking about doing a cleanse together, and I decided, 'Hey, why not. Let’s see what all the fuss is about.' RULE 1. If you are cleansing, ALWAYS do it with a friend. No one likes to be hangry alone.

I read (as any writer does) about some of the reasons a juice cleanse is good for your health. Some of the reasons include: improving energy levels, eliminating harmful foods, resting the liver, rehydrating the body, allowing for maximum detoxification, resting the stomach, repairing the gut, and flooding our body with super nutrients. Sounded like enough to get me to sign up.

So I am here today, friends, to share with you my experience - unfiltered - of living through three days on a juice cleanse. I promise it may not always be pretty, but it’ll be true.

Day One: My first taste.

9:53 AM: OMG GROSS. The green juice. GRASS MOUTH GRASS MOUTH SOS.

10:32 AM: Ok, wait. I like this juice a little more. Now it sort of tastes like bananas. Maybe the delusion is setting in already.

10:42 AM: Surprisingly, I’m not starving. Hurrah!

11:00 AM: Ate a few coconut chips. Eeeek (Bad Sara!). Starting to get hungry and am not excited to drink three green juices a day.

1:04 PM: But wait, the other green juice is DELICIOUS. It’s a spinach, mango, bananers PARTAY up in here.

3:17 PM: Chia seeds juice - NOM NOM.

4:25 PM: I’M EATING SOME ALMONDS BECAUSE I HAVE TO.

8:15 PM: I am at a pre-NFL draft party. I watch all the people drinking fancy things and I drink water with lemon. GLAMOROUSSSS! This was the hardest thing I’ve done relating to food since I found out I was allergic to avocado.

11:04 PM: I HAVE TO EAT EGG WHITES RIGHT NOW BECAUSE MY STOMACH WON’T LET ME SLEEP

Day Two: The Saga Continues.

7:00 AM: I woke up with JOLT. Like a burst of energy. I know I sound like I’m talking crazy, but it’s true.

1:09 PM: I feel weirdly not hungry. And very focused.

4 PM: Feeling fiiiiiine, gurlz.

7:00 PM: Saw a movie and drank the choco-nana one. PARTY IN MY MOUTH. YASSSS HONEY.

9:00 PM: Not even hungry enough to drink my last (6th) shake of the day. But I do it anyway so I don’t have a crazy midnight egg-white escapade again.

Day Three: I think I’m beginning to like this.

9:47 AM: Having my last first juice of the day. The green grass mouth is not so bad anymore.

12:01PM: Dang, dis juice is good. I’m thinking about liquid-lunching more often.

5:00 PM: I feel light and airy and am drinking a peanut butter smoothie thing. Who said you have to be bad to be good?

8:20 PM: I’m at trivia night with my friends at our local bar, drinking my last juice. The bartender is teasing me because I won’t have a drink, but I don’t even want to. I feel more alert, more present, and happier than I have in a very long time.

POST-CLEANSE FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I found myself thinking less about food, and more about life. Rather than focusing on the cleanse as a means to lose weight, or tone up for summer, I thought of it as a way to purge my system of it’s old ways, and previous negative thoughts. I used the cleanse as a reset button. Isn’t that the true meaning of cleanse anyway? To detox your system of ill? Doesn’t this include negative thoughts and emotions?

I’ve learned that a cleanse is 1. Not as bad as I thought and 2. A good way to refresh your life. I will go forward thinking a bit more about how I focus on enjoying the moment, rather than planning my next social engagement (usually involving food).

This was also a test of my willpower. We have to listen to both our mind and body to exist on this planet. If you’re like me, your mind often overpowers listening to your body. This was a test for myself to see if I could really do this. Now, I’ve learned to listen to my body for when it’s really hungry. No, I’ll never be one of those girls who doesn’t indulge in french fries because 'I’m not that hungry.' I will continue to indulge in food, beverages and social events that combine the two. Life is too short not to indulge. But i will definitely be more cognizant of what I am putting into my body, and how much it takes to really make me feel full.

Moreover, I will think more critically about how full my life is. What makes me happy. How can I better nourish my soul on a daily basis? Since the cleanse, I’ve reset. I try to meditate daily, focus on giving my body the nutrients and exercise it needs, and reminding myself what it takes to make me feel filled and fulfilled.

I surprised myself at how much I liked the cleanse. I really, really, liked it. The first day was rough, but after that, it really wasn’t all that bad. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m going to go juice-cleanse-crazy, but I will say I’d do it again.

So there you have it, my cleanse-y friends, now it’s over, that’s the end!

A rhyme never hurt anyone.
